GENDER SUPPORT PLAN

When a student comes out as transgender, non-binary, gender-fluid, etc., we strongly recommend the completion of a Gender Support Plan. A Gender Support Plan is a document that creates a shared understanding of the ways in which a student’s authentic gender will be accounted for and supported at school. School staff, caregivers, and the student can work together to complete this document. All NJSD School Counselors have been trained to support transgender youth and gender support planning.

According to the NJSD Policy on Nondiscrimination Guidelines Related to Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming Students, students and/or families who approach the District with concerns or requests for modifications regarding gender identity and/or gender expression will be invited to work with a designated staff person to develop an individualized support plan. A support plan is a guiding document designed to encourage a student in their education and can be revised as necessary based on the needs of the student. The support plan will be maintained separate from a student's electronic or permanent record and will be stored and safeguarded in an appropriate manner by District staff. In addition to this plan, it is strongly encouraged that all students seek guidance from their School Counselor and/or outside agencies regarding their personal well-being.

Gender Support Plans may include:

• Student’s gender identity, name, and pronouns

• Level of privacy desired

• Staff communication / Communication to peers

• Key contacts at home and at school

• Curriculum considerations

• Access to restrooms, locker rooms, and other school activities
